Anzac Day is an annual celebration in Australia and New Zealand observed as a day of Remembrance of all those Australians and New Zealanders who lost their lives for their countries in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. The day is annually celebrated on April 25, as it’s the anniversary of the first major military campaign battled by both countries’ soldiers known as the “Gallipoli Campaign” in World War I.

Gallipoli Campaign took place in the Gallipoli peninsula (currently in northwestern Turkey) from February 17, 1915, to January 9, 1916. The Gallipoli campaign was intended to force Germany’s ally, Ottoman Empire, out of the war. Australian and New Zealand soldiers were included in this campaign, which was formed with the aim of capturing the Gallipoli Peninsula and opening the way to the Black Sea for the allied navies (Great Britain, France, and the Russian Empire) so that they can take over Constantinople, which was the capital of the Ottoman Empire.

ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, and the soldiers were called Anzacs. The Anzacs landed at Gallipoli on April 25 with plans to boldly kill the Ottoman army led by Mustafa Kemal (Field Marshal, father of the Republic of Turkey, and their first president). But all their plans failed and quickly came to a standstill, and the campaign lasted eight months. In the last of 1915, Allied forces were evacuated after heavy casualties on both sides. The Allied death toll totaled more than 56,000, including 8,709 from Australia and 2,721 from New Zealand.
